We build the backend systems South African businesses depend on.
Beacon Digital Solutions is a software engineering consultancy in Centurion. We design, harden and rescue the systems that carry your operations — Java and Spring Boot services, event-driven architecture, and the integrations that hold everything together. Work is done by senior engineers, documented as it goes, and handed over so your team can own it.
Senior engineers only · Trade-offs written down · Documented handover
The friction
Most operational software fails for the same three reasons.
Nobody actually uses it
The system models how the organisation was supposed to work, not how it does. People route around it, the spreadsheet comes back, and the investment quietly stops earning.
Data arrives too late
Numbers are captured in batches and reconciled at month-end. By the time management sees a problem, the window to do anything useful about it has already closed.
Systems don't talk
Scheduling, stock, payroll and accounting each hold a fragment of the truth. Nobody trusts any single number, so everything gets checked by hand.
Engineering services
Engineering for systems that have to stay up.
We take on engagements for organisations that need backend systems designed, rescued or scaled. Our work is hands-on and delivered by senior engineers — not resourced out.
Java & Spring Boot
Production backends in modern Java and Spring Boot — REST and event-driven services, Spring Security, JPA data layers, and test suites that make releases boring.
Microservices
Service decomposition done carefully: clear domain boundaries, asynchronous messaging, idempotent handlers, and observability built in from day one.
System architecture
Architecture reviews, integration design and migration planning for teams moving off legacy monoliths or manual processes — with the trade-offs written down.
Messaging integrations
WhatsApp Business Platform integrations: Embedded Signup, webhooks, message templates, and conversation state handling at production volumes.
Approach
How we work, and what you are left holding at the end.
Consulting engagements fail in predictable ways: the senior who sold the work disappears, the reasoning behind key decisions is never recorded, and the client inherits something nobody internally can operate. We work deliberately against each of those.
Senior engineers only, never resourced out
The engineer who scopes your work is the engineer who writes the code. We do not staff engagements with juniors under a senior's name, and we would rather decline work than take it on with people who have not done it before.
Trade-offs written down
Every significant decision is recorded with the options considered, what we chose and why, and what it will cost you later. When the context changes in two years, your team can read the reasoning instead of guessing at it.
Observability and tests from day one
Structured logging, metrics, health checks and meaningful alerts go in with the first service, not after the first incident. Automated tests cover the paths that carry money and risk, so releases stop being events.
Handed over documented, not as a black box
Engagements end with runbooks, architecture notes, environment setup and a working handover session with your team. Independence is the deliverable — you should be able to stop working with us without anything breaking.
About
A small consultancy, built around depth rather than headcount.
Beacon Digital Solutions is a software engineering consultancy operating from Clubview, Centurion. It is run by a senior software engineer with years of production experience in Java, Spring Boot and distributed systems — building and operating services where downtime, data loss or a failed integration has a real commercial cost. That background shapes how we work: conservative about complexity, serious about testing and observability, and direct about what a system will and will not do.
We take on a deliberately small number of engagements at a time. The work usually falls into one of four shapes: building a new backend service or platform from scratch; taking over a system that has outgrown whoever built it; designing the integration layer between systems that were never meant to talk to each other; or reviewing an architecture before a business commits budget to it. Engagements run from short advisory reviews through to multi-month delivery, and we are equally willing to say that a problem does not need custom software at all.

Tell us what you are building, inheriting or trying to untangle. The first conversation is a technical one, with the engineer who would do the work — not a sales call. If we are not the right fit for the problem, we will say so.
